Blue Monday
Today (20th Jan 2025) is Blue Monday, no this isn’t some discount shopping day, although it does get used to commercial advantage. Blue Monday is the most miserable day of the year.
Blue Monday is considered the “most depressing day of the year,” typically falling on the third Monday of January. The concept originated in 2005 as part of a marketing campaign by a travel company, claiming to calculate the date using a pseudo-scientific formula.
The formula factored in variables such as:
- Weather conditions (cold and dark in many places).
- Debt levels (post-holiday expenses).
- Time since Christmas (and the end of holiday festivities).
- Failed New Year’s resolutions (leading to feelings of disappointment).
- Low motivational levels and a general sense of needing change.
While popular in culture, it is not based on actual science and is widely criticised by psychologists and scientists. Depression and sadness are complex issues that cannot be reduced to a single day or formula.
Despite its dubious origins, Blue Monday has become an opportunity for discussions about mental health and self-care, with organisations often using the day to raise awareness.
Personally for me, the first day back at work after time off during Christmas is probably my worst day of the year, depressing is probably a step to too far.
However I do think the focus on mental health is important, but as i’ve learned you should focus on metal health everyday:
- How do you feel?
- How can you improve your day?
- Have i set aside sometime today for myself?
Will I do something today to acknowledge Blue Monday? I’ll likely create a moment of joy, by making a purchase. Or better still if i can make someone else’s Blue Monday a little bit better i’ll do that.
Whenever I remember, I try to pay it forwards. The easiest place i find todo this is in the coffee cue. Whilst paying for my coffee or my pastry, i’ll either offer to get the next persons order and make them aware, or i’ll just ask the coffee shop to add on £10 for the next person.
I’ve seen everything from surprised smiles to heartfelt thank-yous, and it’s a reminder of how small gestures can change someone’s day. If you are able to, even if it’s just once, I suggest giving it a go.
That alone might make your Blue Monday, or someone else’s better than ever!
